Recognizing the importance of historic resources to the quality of life in our community, the Southampton NJ Township Committee modified its municipal land use ordinances in 1992 to create:
- A “historic landmark” zoning designation
- An initial list of landmarks
- The Preservation Commission of Historic Southampton (PCHS) to advise the township Planning and Zoning Boards in all matters concerning construction and land use within historically zoned areas.
Along with the designation of sites and zones, specific criteria were outlined for preservation of historic resources. The PCHS applies these standards through a formal application review process. The PCHS also recommends amendments to the landmark list and promotes historic preservation objectives.
Creation of this commission reflects our community’s values:
- Safeguarding our heritage by preserving parts of the township which reflect our cultural, social, economic and architectural history
- Maintaining and developing appropriate and harmonious settings for the architecturally and historically significant landmarks within the township
- Stabilizing and improving property values
- Fostering civic beauty
- Protecting and enhancing the township’s attractions to residents, tourists and visitors as well as serving as a support and stimulus to business and industry
- Promoting use of the historic district for the education, pleasure and welfare of the citizens of the township and its visitors
The Commission consists of 5 regular member and 2 alternate members who are appointed for 2 to 5 year terms by the Mayor (Current Commissioners). The Commissioners meet monthly to review applications and discuss business. (2003 Meeting Schedule).
